Board privacy information and disclosure
Some general guidelines:
Tourette's Syndrome is the topic of misinformation, incorrect assumptions, myth, and urban legends. Our message board is dedicated to remaining based on hard research (please read our Resources forum!). We do not consider anecdotal reports or circumstantial evidence as representing Tourette's Syndrome.
Of course, discussion of anecdote, personal experiences and beliefs, and other conditions which aren't part of Tourette Syndrome that you or your children might be dealing with, is welcome. However we must insist that it doesn't become confused with what the body of medical studies show. It is our firm belief that the best way we can offer support is to present current research findings to the best of our ability that will help those who are having problems be able to tease out where any behavioral problems are coming from and get them treated accordingly.
Tourette Syndrome currently 'enjoys' an exotic reputation; it is common for people to try to make it more than the research shows it to be. However study after study shows that behavioral problems that occur with children who have Tourette's may be secondary to other disorders involved, or parenting that just isn't working with a particular child's make-up.
Because we who founded this board came from a time and an environment that tried to blame all sorts of bad behavior on Tourette's, we cannot let speculative posts stand unchallenged. We are not fond of censorship in any form, however we have found it necessary to a small degree if we wish to keep these boards open. Therefore, disruptive posts may be moved or removed, and consistently disruptive posters may be excluded from the community.
While you are here, you may be solicited to join other boards that may not share our strict adherence to the journal-published medical consensus. Choose your information sources with care. Anyone can find a journal study that shows just about anything; studies that use proper methodology and the entire body of medical journal-published consensus is our focus and context.
Other guidelines:
Please don't worry about whether you're posting in the right forum. If our board hosts feel your post would have a wider viewing audience or be more appropriate in another forum, they will copy the thread to the appropriate forum, and provide a link to the new thread.
Please try to make your subject line as descriptive as possible. This facilitates future searches, makes it easier for newcomers to find help, and makes it easier for all to find information they are looking for. For example, if you have a medication question, posting "Help with meds" is less descriptive than "Questions about Prozac for OCD in a TS child." Posting "HBO Documentary" is less helpful than "HBO Tourette's Documentary, Friday, Nov 11, on HBO." Posting "HELP" is less useful than posting "Questions about new diagnosis of TS, OCD and ADHD." Etcetera ...
When posting about a child, it is very helpful to include the child's age, and to continue to mention age in subsequent posts, since some of us can't keep the ages of all the children here straight.
Do not post links to surveys, or requests for board members to participate in studies, without first consulting with board owner. If you're just looking for help with a school term paper, we don't mind if you post. However if it is something that is going to be published, we have to insist that you contact us first. We don't generally support unscientific, internet surveys, although some have been allowed, so please consult with us.
We don't censure language, but do appreciate an appropriate sense of decorum, since children have been known to read the board.
Please be aware of copyright issues when posting information. Please provide full URL links to websites or bibliographical info for other material which you quote.
Board hosts may edit posts to clarify subject lines or to correct bad links or formatting codes.
If a particular topic should be archived in the Resource section, board hosts will move the threads as needed, once discussion of the topic has ended.
Do take advantage of the General Board info/Test Forum. You can test personal photos, icons, sig files, and, if you need to make a complex post, with lots of formatting and editing, you can first compose the post on the Test forum, and then copy it to its final destination once you've finished editing.
We prefer one or two-line signature files, at most. Large sig files or over-sized pictures can be slow to load, especially on long threads, and are not part of our board culture. If you want to post a picture, please add it to the Off-Topic forum, and if you have a large signature file, please be sure to check the option of not using it here.
